For a natural look when designing a waterfall and a stream on your residential property, you can use full stone, thin veneer stone and/or patio stone. The ground where you build the waterfall and stream will help to determine which of these stone shapes will work best.

WATERFALL

To construct a waterfall, layer full stones and/or thin veneer stones on the edge of a pool or pond cementing them in place.

Full stone will create a substantial waterfall that looks like it is lined with stone boulders. Thin veneer stone will create a more delicately stacked and layered waterfall.

When placing the stones for the waterfall, bury a plumbing line in them to carry water from a water source to the edge of the waterfall. Do not cement the stones covering the plumbing line in case you wish to access them later. Stream

To create a natural stream that runs from your water source to the waterfall, dig a trench and line the bottom with a plastic or rubber liner.

Place patio stones or pavers on both sides of the trench to separate it from the rest of your yard. Lay full stones or thin veneer stones on top of the trench liner to create a stream that bubbles and babbles as it travels.

If desired, you can plant grasses and water plants around the edges of the stream leading to the waterfall.

PLUMBING

For convenience, use a water source that is close to your residence or garage, such as a hose line. Plumbing lines can be buried in the ground from the water source to the stream and waterfall so that water from the source can cascade over the stones into the pool.

Stone Garden Beds

Raised stone garden beds can be constructed throughout your garden for trees, plants, flowers and even vegetable gardens.

To build a raised garden bed, lay full stone or thin veneer stones around the perimeter of a predetermined garden bed. Fit the stones closely together with cement to hold them in place.

Stack the stones to the desired height that is comfortable for planting and caring for your garden. With a pitchfork, loosen the soil in the bottom of the raised bed so that plant roots can access groundwater.

Fill the garden bed with new soil to within a few inches from the top of the garden bed wall and plant your garden.

If desired, you can install a water sprinkler system on the top of the garden bed for ease in watering your growing plants.

Stone Pathways

You can use flagstone patio stones throughout your garden to create flat pathways that are easy for walking around your property. These pathways can lead from your property line to your house and garage between trees, vegetation and garden beds.

To build a stone pathway, determine where you want to place your path and excavate a shallow trench that is as deep as your flagstone. Line the outside of your pathway with stone pavers.

Lay pieces of flagstone in the middle of the path, leaving an inch or so between them and a few inches between the flagstones and the sides of the path.

Once you have placed the flagstones, spread a layer of gravel between the flagstones and between the flagstones and the sides of the path. If there are any gaps in the stone pathway, fill them with fine sand.
